Personal, Educational, & Professional Background

Pesonal, Professional, & Educational Background

Personal Life

I was born and raised in Arkansas where I aged out of the foster care system at 18. As a young adult, I worked with teens as a camp counselor and as a youth director for several years.

I moved to Texas in 2009 to be closer to family. I am divorced and have three children and a four-year-old granddaughter. I supported my children by getting my Cosmetology and Instructor licenses, both teaching and providing services in the industry.

I have had the privilege of working with the public in close relationships providing services to all ages and teaching adults for 20 years.

Behind the chair, I felt the calling to do more than just hearing my clients talk to me when getting a service or listening to my students while in school. I wanted to be able to provide help, support, and solutions to the challenges that they were facing. This is when I decided to become a teen counselor, therapist for young adults, and family counselor.

Education as a Therapist

Once my children became teens, I was able to go back to school and complete my Bachelor's in Applied Communication at UALR in Arkansas and my Master's in Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington.

I excelled in school and was on the Dean's list each year while getting both degrees. I was the president of Lamda pi Eta while at UALR and was a founding member and secretary of the club Mavs for Mental Health Awareness while at UTA.

Professional Experience

I work full-time as a therapist associate for children, teens, young adults, and families in foster care and have been with the agency since 2021. I began by training the foster parents through the therapeutic approaches designed to help foster parents and foster kids connect and build their relationship.

I am also on the crisis team that responds to children, teens, and young adults who may be struggling behaviorally with things like defiance, temper tantrums, violence, and self-harm. I am trained to help the child, teen, or young adult de-escalate and reconnect with the parent when responding to the call.

During my time with the foster care agency, I began the teen group where we met once a week for group therapy and activities. In addition to facilitating the teen group, I also mentor several teens and young adults as they aged out of the foster care system.

My experience with training foster parents and family therapy sessions helps me see the importance of not only helping the parents or the child but also helping the family as a whole.

Coming from the foster care system and meeting my birth family after I was an adult was an eye-opener for me to see where I came from. Often times, it is the family that needs help in one way or another instead of just the teen or young adult due to circumstances, although any therapy is worthwhile.

I am knowledgeable of and practice several therapy approaches that are supported by research and shown to be effective.  A few of the things that my clients have struggled with and what I have helped them to overcome include:

Teen, Young Adult, Family, & Couples Therpist

My Therapy Approach

Being able to help others is a passion that I take very seriously. I believe that everyone deserves the chance to be heard and seen and an opportunity for healing -- particularly teens and young adults.

When I meet a teen or young adult, it's important that I help and know them as an individual from their point of view and perspective of the world. I am not judgmental of any person no matter their race, religion, gender, or individual identifiers. I am a mom of bi-racial children and have a little sister who is in the LBGTQIA community.

I also understand how important it is when working with teens or young adults to involve the parent's as much as possible. This often looks like meeting with the parent for a few minutes at the beginning or end of a session. It's also important to me that I am available in between sessions to answer questions or offer support for the parents I work with when needed.

I know the importance of having a safe space for those that I see in therapy and strive to make sure each person feels safe and supported through the process.

To succeed in any relationship takes work. This is a common understanding that many of us have.

However, sometimes life will throw challenges at us that create situations that put strain on our marriage or relationship. It may be due to:

  • Choices and actions that have been made by one partner.

  • Financial downturn in the economy creating financial strain.

  • Feeling like you're growing apart.

  • Feeling like you don't have as much in common as you used to.

Whatever the reason may be, marriage counseling and couples therapy can help. Couples therapy and marriage counseling has also been found to work in less time than individual therapy can.

If you've worked hard for this relationship and find that there are now barriers in the way of maintaining a healthy relationship, contact us at Katy Teen & Family Counseling.
