About Madeline: Teen & Young Adult Specialist
A Happy, Chill, Calming Soul Who is an Expert in Counseling Teens, Young Adults, & Families
Hello, I’m Madeline Rickmers, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate (LMFT-A) based in Katy, Texas. As an LMFT-A, my focus of study and practice has been with counseling for teens and young adult counseling in one-on-one counseling. I will also provide family counseling as needed.
I was Born and raised in Cypress, Texas and I have always had a passion for helping teens and young adults navigate life's challenges. I’m thrilled to work with teens, young adults, and families, supporting them as they face everything from everyday struggles to more complex emotional or behavioral challenges. I provide a safe, compassionate space where clients can feel seen, heard, and understood as they work towards accomplishing their counseling goals!
Professional & Educational Journey
My professional journey began with my love for understanding human behavior and how we influence one another with our actions, This led me to pursue my undergraduate studies at the University of Arkansas—Woo Pig!
I triple majored in Criminal Justice, Sociology, and Psychology. Here is where it was solidified for me how crucial it is for teens to have a trusted adult they can confide in. While in college, I worked at a before and after-school program with high school teens, an experience that deeply influenced my decision to go into counseling.
After graduating during the pandemic, I managed a similar program for younger children before deciding to pursue my Master’s in Counseling at St. Edward's University in Austin.
During my internship, I worked at a partial hospitalization program/intensive outpatient program for teens, where I used creative approaches like games, drawing, and art to build rapport for those who struggled to participate in counseling. Once rapport and trust are built, they were able to be open and we got good work done!
Since completing my master’s, I’ve had the privilege of working with teens, young adults, and families. I have also worked with couples but teenagers and young adults is where my heart lies.
I successfully addressed a range of challenges including: ADHD, anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, depression, self-harm, anger management, family dynamics, work-life balance, stress management, marriage counseling, self-esteem issues, and LGBTQ+ clients.
My Approach
I believe therapy should be a collaborative process, where clients feel empowered to take an active role in their healing. My approach is grounded in Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). These approaches are supported by research and shown to be effective, which they have proven to be in my work.
I also work from a humanistic, client-centered framework, meaning I prioritize each client’s unique experience and the importance of reaching their full potential as human beings.
I’m especially passionate about providing a safe, supportive space for LGBTQ+ teens and young adults. I understand how vital it is to have someone to talk to who can help navigate the complexities of identity, relationships, and self-acceptance. I involve the parents every step of the way in this journey while also being able to maintain the teen or young adult's confidentiality.
Interests & Hobbies
When I’m not in the therapy room, you can probably find me enjoying college football—I’m a huge fan of both the sport and my fantasy football league!
I love spending time with family and friends, traveling to new places, and immersing myself in new experiences. Whether I’m watching a game or exploring a new city, I always look forward to learning more about the world and deepening my connection to those around me.
