Reasons Parents Seek Teen Therapy for Their Teens
Parents often seek teen therapy out of concern for their teen's struggles. Changes in mood and behavior, that seem more than normal teenage angst, cause parents to worry. The once happy teen has vanished leaving a teen mired in emotional turmoil and hurt.
As parents, we look back to try to find a key moment or events that could have brought about these changes. Parents can become frustrated and overwhelmed trying everything to help their teen. Despite all the efforts by the parents to help, the problems still persist.
The emotional toll that parents experience is heavy. It begins to encroach on and impact work and personal relationships. Parents may start to question themselves on whether they have done enough. Doubts start to enter causing concern about if they have done the 'right' things or 'wrong' things.
Common Life Struggles Teen Therapy Can Help With
Teen years can be a difficult period of time when even when emotional or behavior struggles are absent. Add these to the mix and the result can be significant hurt, heartache, and concern. Parents who love their teen experience these feelings deeply and the teen also experiences these feelings on a more acute level. Some common struggles that result in parents bringing their teen to counseling are:
Strained Relationships
The relationships your teen has in their life are becoming more and more strained. Family relationships have become more argumentative, hostile, and conflictual. Your teen may isolate more away from the family spending a lot of time on their own. The closeness and connection once had with your teen is replaced with worry and concern. Your teen may not hang out with friends like they used to or they may have chosen friends you don't approve of.
Teen Peer Group
Your teen's group of friends and their activities cause you concern. Your teen may be falling into behavior and making choices that are not healthy for them. Your teen rationalizes why their choices won't hurt them or the family and it's not a big deal. Your teen tells you that other parents let their kids do these thing and you simply don't understand them.
You want to set a limit and tell your teen that they are no longer allowed to hang out with this group of friends. You also know that doing so will bring down the wrath of your teen, leaving you without any good options.
Teen Substance Use
Your teen tells you that 'it's just weed'. They tell you that it's not addictive or harmful and many people use it. They cite the rich and famous as examples of being able to use weed or other substances without problems.
Your teen tells you that they know parents who let their kids use and wish you could be like them. Besides, it helps 'open their mind' and is helping them be a better person.
Teen substance use brings with it dishonesty and manipulation to keep the use secret as long as they can. Once you find out, the lies and manipulation continue which destroys the trust you once had for your teen. Your relationship becomes strained and you wonder if it will ever be like it was.
Teen ADHD
Teen ADHD inflicts an artificial ceiling on the teen's ability to utilize their strengths and talents to their fullest. Teen ADHD creates significant difficulty in concentration, focus, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
As a result, teen ADHD not only impacts the teens ability to function well in school, teen ADHD also tend to negatively impact social and family relationships.
Teen Being Bullied/Cyber Bullied
The family home used to be a place of safety and refuge from bullying. With social media, there is nowhere teens are safe from this cruel and traumatic targeting. The impact of bullying/cyber bullying can result in teen trauma.
The effect of teen trauma causes low self-esteem and low self-worth. The damage this does to the teen's self-image can be devastating. Teen depression and teen anxiety can arise out of teen trauma due to bullying/cyber bullying.
Gifted Students, Teen Athletes, and Perfectionism
The schools that our gifted teens and talented teen athletes attend are some of the best in the nation. Our schools host many, many gifted students and talented teen athletes. Because of this the pressure for our gifted teens to achieve at the highest levels is among the highest in the nation.
Perfectionism can evolve from this pressure to achieve for gifted teens and talented teen athletes. Out of this perfectionism springs obstacles of high self doubt and low self-worth. Teen depression and teen anxiety can settle in creating another barrier to their success.
Gifted students and talented teen athletes who attend competitive schools are at risk. The stress and pressure this competitiveness creates are factors in mental wellness. Teen anxiety and teen depression are common outcomes of teen perfectionism.
Teen therapy for gifted teens can help to overcome the ravages of perfectionism. Family counseling for gifted students and talented teen athletes is an important element. Your gifted teen can achieve at the highest levels once teen depression or teen anxiety are a thing no longer.
Decrease in Motivation or Drive
Your teen's motivation to earn good grades has dropped. You find your teen's grades starting to slip and know that your teen is capable of so much more. You see teen anxiety or teen depression creep into your teen's life. Teen depression or teen anxiety is hampering their ability to function at previous levels. Fear, self-doubt, and hopelessness have crept into your teen's life.
Though this can tie into the challenges gifted teens face, it is also more general to all students. Teens today face a barrages of extra stressors that impact their ability to cope. Motivation and happiness drop as they know they are capable of so much more.
Teen Depression and Teen Anxiety
Teen depression drains the teen's motivation and can cause your teen to feel hopeless. Your once happy teen now looks sad and defeated and your unsure about how this happened. You try to help but it doesn't change and you're left questioning what you can do to help.
Teen anxiety causes your teen to worry about even the smallest things. This worry causes your teen distress and impacts their ability to be happy and succeed. Your teen fears failure, looking foolish in front of others and saying or doing the 'wrong' things. These things all lead to your teen losing their confidence and self-esteem.
You find your teen now isolating more often, or see them becoming angry where there used to not be anger. When you ask them what's wrong, they won't tell you. They say things like, "I'm just tired" or "I'm just stressed" and won't let you into their inner struggles to help.
We provide therapy for teen anxiety in Katy Texas and to those teens in the Houston area. We also provide therapy for teen depression in Katy and for those in the Houston area.

Teen Trauma or Teen PTSD
Teen trauma is when a teen experiences an overwhelming life event. This experience impacts their happiness, feelings of worth, and confidence to succeed.
As a result, they aren't able to function at the high levels they used to function at. These teens haven't been the same since they experienced that life event.
We all experience traumatic events. Where one may experience a traumatic event and another the same event, the reactions may not be the same.
Teen trauma like bullying, loss of a relationship, losing a loved one, losing a pet are all traumatic. For some teens, this can cause intense emotional distress. As a result, the teen's ability to find happiness and confidence in life is very challenging.
Teen Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop for someone who experiences teen trauma. Teen PTSD is a serious struggle for those who have experienced teen trauma. There are many effective teen trauma therapy & PTSD treatments out there and there is hope.
Teen Counseling Can Help You Find Answers
Parents hurt to see their teens struggle with emotional or behavioral problems. While their teen struggles, parents work hard to maintain the peace and happiness in the home.
Teens often do not understand exactly where these struggles are coming from. The thoughts and feelings they are experiencing may be new for them and are complex. Teens may not have the words to describe their inner experience.

This is where Katy Teen & Family Counseling comes in. We can work with your teen and help them make sense of and understand their inner world. We can also help your teen understand where these thoughts and feelings may be coming from.
We will also work with your teen and you family to learn how to manage and overcome these struggles. Things like teen anxiety, teen depression, and teen trauma can be successfully resolved.
Teen Therapy Can Help Restore Hope & Happiness
The causes and symptoms of the life struggle may be different for each teen. Over the years, we have helped a variety of teens reach their therapeutic goals.
We have also observed that teens today are experiencing similar struggles as other teens. Whether they are teens from Katy, Fulshear, or Houston, teens are experiencing very similar life struggles. The causes and symptoms may be different for each teen but the hurt, pain, and hopelessness is the same.
It can be hard to think about reaching out and asking for help from a teen therapist. As a teen, we want to be able to solve our own problems. We Can Meet the Needs of Your Teen Through Our Teen Counseling Approaches
The life struggles that teens deal with today carries with it it's own unique approach. We tailor our therapeutic approach to help your teen identify and pin point the cause of the issue. We will also tailor the therapeutic approach for the best pathway forward to success. Below are some of those approaches:
Teen Therapy with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) treatment is a 'gold standard' in working with a variety of life issues. CBT helps with teen depression, teen anxiety, teen trauma and other life struggles. CBT has been well researched and found effective in working with these and other life issues. This is why CBT is widely used in therapeutic services.
Teen Counseling with Neurofeedback
Neurofeedback is an enjoyable approach to therapy for teens. Neurofeedback therapy maps the brain and identifies the source of where the problems originate. Through neurofeedback therapy training, the client is able to successfully resolve the issue.
Neurofeedback helps with a variety of life struggles your teen may face. Neurofeedback helps with:
-
Difficulty sleeping
-
Optimizing brain performance (Peak Performance), and
-
a host of other life struggles
Teen Therapy with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Other approaches have been well researched and found to be highly effective. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of those approaches. EMDR is one of the top therapeutic approaches in working with teen trauma & PTSD. It is also effective in treatment for teen depression, treatment for teen anxiety, teen panic attacks and other challenges.
Teen Counseling with Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is helpful for those lack motivation in therapy. MI is a short term approach designed to reduce resistance and increase motivation.
Teen Therapy Collaborative & Proactive Solutions
Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) helps the teen and parent learn to solve problems. CPS is a very collaborative and empathic approach designed to strengthen relationships. Not only does the problem get solved but the teen and parent have a more connected relationship.
Functional Family Therapy
Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is a short term, 12 session, family therapy. The FFT model does not focus on dysfunction but on how needs of the family members are being met. Once the needs are identified, FFT helps family members meet those needs in healthy ways.
There Are Answers & There is Hope Through Teen Therapy

How long are the teen counseling sessions?

What therapeutic approach will you use?

Has teen therapy been effective with teens experiencing the problem my teen faces?

A Message for Teens From Katy Teen & Family Counseling
If you are a teen reading this, it is either because your parents want you to go to teen therapy and your checking us out. It may be that you want to start teen counseling and you're looking for the right teen counselor.
Know that there is understanding and compassion at Katy Teen & Family Counseling. This is our and my life's mission, passion, and calling. We've worked with teens and families because we enjoy it. We also have gotten pretty good at this as we started working with teens and families in 2003.
Teen Counseling - You Are Not Alone
More than anything I want to tell you that you are not alone! I know it feels that way a lot of the time but it is true.
We see so many teens in teen therapy who are struggling with the same or very similar struggles. Teens today have become pretty good at the Instagram, TikTok, Facebook persona.
This persona tends to hide a mountain of hurt while presenting on social media as happy and care free. This persona may be able to fool the social media world but in the end, we cannot fool ourselves. The hurt, pain, and hopeless resides within and is a constant companion.
Because of people's social media personas we tend to compare ourselves to them. We compare our insides to their outsides.
On social media, everyone looks like they are happy and have the perfect life. This can lead to us feeling alone as if no other teen is struggling with what you are struggling with.
If you had a super power of being able to hear others thoughts, you may be surprise at what you hear. You would hear that those personas on social media are struggling the same way or with other issues.
You may not have that super power but the next best thing is taking it from a therapist who does. Okay, maybe I don't have that super power but, I do meet with teens day in and day out who tell me their innermost thoughts.
This is how I can tell you, with confidence, that you are not alone. There are those who came before you, into our therapy offices, who struggled the same as you. They have gone on to conquer those challenges when at the beginning they doubted they could. Again, we've gotten pretty good at this thing!
Teen Therapy - Stress is a Factor in Teen Depression & Teen Anxiety
There are reasons why you are experiencing what you are experiencing. One factor is the stress level teens today carry on their shoulders.
I don't need to tell you the following as you are living it daily. Teens today are under more pressure and stress than teens in previous generations. Adults experience many stressors from many different sources in life. In comparison, adults often feel as though teens 'have it easy' -- and in many ways, maybe you do.
A study conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA) evaluated teen stress levels. The result showed that American teens experience stress in patterns similar to adults when school is out. But, during the school year, teens experience even higher levels of stress than adults. And the stress and pressures are only increasing.
The above study is only one of many variables that may be contributing to the difficulty you are facing. The levels of stress that teens face today is problematic.
Teens today face higher rates of teen depression and teen anxiety. Teen depression and teen anxiety have increased 52% in the last 10 years. Pediatricians are now asked to screen individuals ages 12-2 for depression annually as a result.
Reaching out for help is usually the hardest step in your journey to get help. There are many teens who do and it takes courage. Though there will be hard work during teen therapy, the hardest step is sometimes this first step. You can call, email, or text and one of our caring therapists will respond.
Once you start teen counseling at Katy Teen & Family Counseling, we will be available to you each step of the way. You will have your own personal teen therapist to guide you. We will also be there between sessions should the need arise.
Don't put off calling any longer. Reach out today and let us let use help. You'll be glad you did.
